What Makes Labradorite Special?

As a mineral, Labradorite is very unique. If you look closely at one, you will see a magnificent display of iridescent colors. This is due to light reflecting back and forth off natural internal fractures in the rock and is known by the term “Labradorescence”.

Labradorite Facts

  • Labradorite is a Feldspar material mined from many locations around the world, including Newfoundland, Canada, Norway, South America, Mexico and the USA. Nevertheless, Madagascar and Finland are the sources of the most valuable varieties of Labradorite. Finland especially is famous for the variety called Spectrolite that exhibits a schiller effect and radiates brilliant colors in shades of green, blue, yellow, orange and dark red.
  • In India, Labradorite is called “Black Rainbow” as a salute to its range of amazing colors. Elsewhere it has earned the name “Firestone” for the same reason.
  • The background color of this mineral is an almost unattractive dark and smoky gray. But the stones burst into life when the colors start to radiate when held to the light. This means the individual stones have to be cut by very skilled cutters, in order to highlight and enhance this effect that makes Labradorites so special.
  • As a gemstone, Labradorite is considered a unique material. It is hard and durable and can be cut into cabochons or faceted.
  • Large chunks of this rock are also used for carving exquisite ornaments and artifacts.

Labradorite Jewelry

The Ashanti Jewels collections feature some simple, yet elegant designs made with faceted Labradorite gemstones teamed with 925 Sterling Silver or 14 karat Gold Filled metal. Charming Labradorite dangle earrings as individual items or with the matching Labradorite pendant necklace are available for you to select from.

They make wonderful gifts too, especially for those born in February and March as it is the birthstone for those two months. All purchases come to you beautifully packaged and ready to be presented.

Caring for your Labradorite jewelry is also very important. Even though it is a tough and durable stone, scratching and dropping on a hard surface should be avoided. Store each Labradorite jewelry separately and use only soap and warm water with a soft brush to clean.
