Onyx – December’s Birthstone

The stunning Onyx gemstone represents the month of December as its birthstone, and the Zodiac sign Leo. The 7th and 10th wedding anniversaries too have Onyx as the symbolic gemstone.

What is Onyx?

It is a variety of Chalcedony Quartz that belongs in the microcrystalline group.

It forms as a solid black or layered stone, that is identified by the solid color or parallel bands of black and white.

To achieve the rich black color it is famous for, Black Onyx is usually dyed by saturating the stones with chemical solutions. This produces a brilliant, commercially advantageous appearance that would significantly raise the value of each stone, as well as any jewelry that it is used for.

The banded black and white Onyx, however, is usually natural and free of dyes.

Onyx Sources

Mined from countries such as China, India, Madagascar, Uruguay and the USA, Onyx is a moderately hard stone that is used for carving of cameos, intaglios and other decorative items in addition to jewelry.

Onyx Legends and Powers

The Onyx was named after the Greek word for the fingernail.

According to ancient myth, Cupid clipped the fingernails of the Goddess Venus while she slept, and left the clippings scattered on the ground.

And since Venus was a Goddess, this meant that no part of her could ever die.

So the Gods decided to turn the clippings into stones, and thereby preserved them.

These stones came to be known as Onyx.

Black stones are believed to possess protective powers, and Onyx is no different. It repels negative energy and helps fortify one’s self-confidence.

Sharpening the senses is a benefit attributed to Onyx. It has been known to help separate negative emotions such as grief and sorrow from the more positive feelings and remove them.
